India
India is one of the ancient civilization in the world.
It has displayed remarkable progress in the field of agriculture , industry, technology and overall economic development .
1. Location
India lies entirely in the Northern hemisphere.
The main land extends between
latitude -- 8 degree 4 minutes and 37 degree 6 minutes
and
longitude -- 68 degree 7 and 97 degree 25 minute
Important Terms
1. The Equator -- It is an imaginary line that divides the globe into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
2. Latitudes -- Horizontal mapping lines on Earth are lines of latitude. They are also known as "parallels" of latitude, because they run parallel to the equator.
3. Longitude -- Vertical mapping lines on Earth are lines of longitude, known as "meridians".
-- The five major parallels of latitudes from north to south are called: Arctic Circle, Tropic of Cancer, Equator, Tropic of Capricorn, and the Antarctic Circle.

Note -- the Tropic of Cancer divides the India into almost two equal parts .It passes through the following 8 states :-
Gujarat ,MP ,Chhattisgarh ,Rajasthan, Jharkhand ,West Bengal ,Tripura ,Mizoram

Rank = 7th (India in Area)

Coastline length (including Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep) = 7516.6 Km

Arabian sea in the --- West ,
Bay of Bengal in the ---- East and
Indian ocean in the ---- south
Standard Meridian Time
Standard Meridian Time refers to the time System that is applicable throughout India.
This is called Standard Meridian Time as it passes along the standard meridian of India through Mirzapur (UP) .......
This has been taken to avoid confusion between due to the different latitudinal extent..
e.g : The Sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat , but watches show the same time because SMT is applicable throughout India....
3. India and the World
Indian landmass is situated between east and west Asia and is a southward extension of the Asian continent..

From western coast -- West Asia , Africa and Europe
From Eastern Coast -- East Asia and South East Asia
Indian ocean
India has the longest coastline on Indian Ocean. This is because of India's eminent position , the ocean is named after India.
#Contact with the world through land routes
India's contact with the world through the land routes are much older than her maritime contacts.
The various passes across the mountains in the north have provided passage to the travellers.
This led to exchange of many goods and Ideas.
India to World.
Ideas -- The Indian numerals , Panchatantra , Ramayana , Upanishad etc and
Goods --- Spices , Cotton , Muslin reached the world from India.
World to India
Ideas --- Architectural style of minarets , Domes and sculpture style from Greek etc.

India occupies important position in South Asia and has 28 states and 29 UTs.

East --- Myanmar and Bangladesh
North -West --- Pakistan and Afghanistan
South -- Srilanka and Maldives
