Class Viii Geography
Chap --1 Resources Full Notes
1. Definition
A resource is anything that can be used to fulfill a need.
e. g :- Coal you use to produce electricity, the paper used in your textbooks etc..
Note -- A thing becomes a resource when it has some utility (use).
e. g:-- A piece of log may have no utility for you but when a carpenter converts it into a table, it becomes usable.
2.Types of Resources
The resources can be of three types. They are :
A. Natural Resources B. Human-made resources C. Human resources
A. Natural Resources
The resources which are present in the nature and can be used without much changes are referred to as natural resources.
e. g:- River water, air, minerals ,plants etc.
Natural resources are further classified into four groups..
a. Origin
According to the origin of the resource, it can be classified into two types ----- Biotic and Abiotic.
• Biotic resources : Biotic resources are those which are obtained from the biosphere like animals, birds, fish, forests etc...
• Abiotic resources : Abiotic resources are non living things like water, air etc.
b. Stock and Distribution
According to the distribution or location of the resource, it can be classified into two types ----- Ubiquitous and localised.
• Ubiquitous Resources : The resources that are found everywhere in the earth are called ubiquitous resources.
e. g :- air
• Localised Resources : The resources that are found only in a particular area are known as localised resources.
e. g:- copper, coal etc.
c. Level of Development and use
According to the Level of Development and use, resources can be classified into two groups : Actual and Potential resources.
•Actual resources : Those resources whose quantity and quality is known to us and are currently being used .
e. g:-- Petroleum and natural gas obtained from the Mumbai, coal from Jharkhand, Odisha etc
•Potential resources : The resources whose quantity and quality is not known to us and are not currently being used.
This is because we may not have the required technology to use that resources.
e. g:- Uranium in Ladakh etc.
d. Exhaustibility
According to the exhaustibility, resources can be classified into two groups : Renewable and Non-renewable resources.
•Renewable resources : Those resources which are renewed quickly.
e. g:- Air, water,solar energy etc.
Renewable resources are of also of two types ----Inexhaustible and exhaustible resources.
Inexhaustible resources : The resources which are continuously available and do not finish after use by human.
e. g:- Air and solar energy.
Exhaustible resources : The resources which can be finished completely.
e. g :- Wildlife etc.
•Non-renewable resources : The resources which have a limited stock on the earth and takes thousands of years to be renewed .
e. g:- Fossil fuels like coal, petroleum etc.
B. Human-made Resources
The resources created by humans by using natural resources is called Human-made Resources.
e. g:- Steel is obtained after mixing coal, limestone with iron, we get paper from trees etc.
C. Human Resources
➡️ Human Resources refers to the number and ability of people.
➡️Human beings are the most important resource which can create more and more resources and use it.
➡️They need knowledge, skill and technology to do so.
Conservation of Resources
➡️ Due to the growth of population our needs grew very rapidly, we are using more and more resources to fulfil it. As a result they are depleting faster.
➡️ Some resources have been polluted very much that issues like global warming began.
➡️ Therefore we must focus on the conservation of resources.
Ways to conserve resources
• Reducing the consumption of resources.
• Recycling available resources.
• Making use of more Non-conventional sources of energy like solar energy, biogas etc.

Live Virtual classroom is immensely preferred now as they have many advantages when compared to classroom education. Students can take one to one live classes from the comfort of their homes without having to travel to long distances. Many E-Learning websites in India provide online Ncert solutions to the students.
